The Art of Bop Drumming

John Riley has written several important books in drum education. At Skillz Drum Academy we use this one and Beyond Bop Drumming anytime we can. We believe this is truly a masterpiece. It has excellent exercises for starters and some really well written play along jazz songs. The suggested listening material (discography) alone is worth the investment if you ask me.

Here are some suggestions when studying from tAoBD:

1. Play the swing ride pattern by itself along to some of the songs on the accompanying cd. You may also use some jazz standards you prefer. Freddie the Freeloader by Miles Davis is a nice starting point. Just search for Oscar Peterson piano trio and you’ll find plenty.
2. Sing the swing pattern while working on the coordination exercises.
3. Combine these exercises to create 2-bar phrases. Play these along to some music again.
4. Always, ALWAYS let the swing prevail instead of the coordination. Easier sdaid than done, I know..
