Mel Bay Studio: Jazz Drum Cookbook
The Studio/Jazz Drum Cookbook by John Pickering is all about coordination in a jazz setting. It’s a classic and we use this all the time at Skillz Drum Academy. The material is well categorized and it presents an enormous amount of exercises. It can be difficult to get lost in the mechanical side of things though. So be sure not to lose track of your right hand while playing these exercises.
Suggested way of studying:
- Try to memorize the exercise as quickly as possible and then look at your right hand.
- Try to count 8th note triplets along
- If counting triplets goes well then try to sing along the right hand: ding..ding.dingding..ding.ding (as 1..2.plet3..4.plet1)
